“TIME IS NOT RIPE”
SEPARATE UNIVERSITIES PROFESSOR THOMAS’S VIEWS “When the reorganisation of the University of New Zealand was discussed recently, it was generally held that tho time was not ripe for the establishment of four separate Universities owing to the fact that both the population ol' the country and the college staffs were too small. Thus, I feel that the proposal for two universities is merely a transitional step toward what some people consider advisable, lour institutions,” commented Professor A. P. W. Thomas, chairman of the Auckland Grammar Schools Board and a member of the New Zealand University Senate when discussing the proposed newhigher educational system. “1 think that the establishment of separate universities, ultimately, will be inevitable, but the time has hardly come yet. I certainly do not regard the proposed scheme as quite satisfactory with the present population, though, of course, it must come eventually.
