MAORI FISHING RIGHTS
OFFICIAL ATTITUDE SOUGHT The Minister of Marine the Hon. ,T. B. Donald, is being requested by the Akarana Maori Association for his attitude on tho whitebait industry, as the regulations affect Maoris. and the probable effect on the breeding of toheroas by motor speed racing on the Ninety Mile Beach. The association raised the question recently, but it now* considers the Govment’s attitude should be known definitely. Copies of the letter to Mr. Donald are to be sent to the Maori members of the House of Representatives, Sir Apirana Ngata, Mr. Tan Henare and Mr. T. 11. Makitanara. It is being pointed out by the association that many Maoris have had whitebait as a food supply without interruption for centuries, and restrictions will mean the loss of this suppl;.’ and, further, an effect on a source o£ income. In North Auckland, tho Maoris are concerned over the possibility of damage to the toheroa beds.
