Second Day of Grand National Carnival
Membo Loses Race in Inquiry Room
CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. For the continuation of the Grand National carnival at Riccarton today the weather was again cold and wintry, although the presence of the sun made matters more pleasant. The attendance was not up to the usual standard of this metropolitan club. Track conditions were much better than on the first day. The totalisator handled £35,345, against £43,483. Hunt Cup Tractarian, £754, was a better favourite than Diana’s Lad £404 and Taramoa £337 in the Hunt Cup. From the outset the race was a chapter of accidents. Diana’s Lad and Peteret.te fell at the first of the kennels double, where Double Soult held charge from Kulrange. Tractarian. Taramoa, Marco Polo, Kaikahu and Farader. Two fences later, the brush at the top of the straight, casualties were again reported in the case of Marco Polo and Akbar. Passing the stands double Soult was still in the van from Tractarian, Kulrange, Taramoa, Kaikanui and Parader. Turning into the back stretch Double Soult held six lengths’ advantage over Tractarian, with daylight back to Kaikahu, nothing else really having a chance. The favourite joined Double Soult moving to the kennels, and soon held sway, leading into tli© straight, followed by Kaiftahu, Taramoa, Double Soult and Parader, who fell at the second to last obstacle, and Kulrange, the final fence bringing down the last-named. Only four remained, and Tractarian came home an easy winner ten lengths ahead of Taramoa, with four lengths to Kaikahu. Double Soult was the other to finish. Woolston Handicap The first day’s winner, On Top, was expected to emulate that feat in the Woolston Handicap, and was backed accordingly, the figures on the favourites being, On Top £1,217, Charmeuse £566, Desert Song £547 and Portray £482. When they were dispatched Grand Acre was first prominent from Charmeuse, Blue Paper, On Top, Ex Dono and Portray, but on to the course proper Blue Paper led Charmeuse, Desert Song, Grand Acre, Muff, Portray and Ex Dono. All these were disputing the issue a furlong and a-half from home, but when asked the question Charmeuse responded gamely, going away at the end to be three lengths ahead of Desert Song at the finish. Blue Paper hung on well, only half a length away third, and was followed home by Miss Bradbury, Portray, Muff, Ex Dono and Memories. The favourite. On Top, broke a blood vessel in the race, being pulled up at the distance post. Beaufort Steeples Radiac’s three successive victories caused him to go out at short odds for the Beaufort Steeples. He was twice as well supporter as anything else, being entrusted with £1,114. as against Kapuna £657* Matu £491, and Snowfall £361. The start was effected at the mile post. Approaching the kennels double Airtight held the role of pacemaker, closely attended bv Snowfall, Radiate, Diamond Jack, who fell at the fourth fence, Wharncliffe, Radiac, Matu and Kapuna. Passing the stands Radiac showed line lepping powers, to go away from Radiate, while Kapuna was eight lengths away, and Snowfall last. Radiate was momentarily in charge turning into the back, but Radiac again took charge, with Kapuna overhauling him at every stride. At the kennels double Ivapuna was in front, while Matu took third berth. From this out Kapuna made no mistakes, and comfortably defeated Radiac by five lengths. Matu came on strongly at the end and was six lengths back third, four lengths in front of Snowfall. Spreydon Hurdles Fancies for the Spreydon Hurdles took a wide range, Paris £907, West Dome £875, Gay Fashion £542 and Zippor £517, all being in demand. Incident came early, Gold Mint failing to overcome the initial obstacle, while Zippor blundered badly, for his jockey t° make a splendid recovery. Gay Fashion and Exide led past the stands, but at Cutts’s Membo jumped to the front, being joined at the mile post by Gay Fashion, with Exide, Paris and West Dome close up and Zippor last. There was little change till they reached the home turn, where Membo led Exide. Gay Fashion, Paris and West Dome. Exide retired when the straight was reached, and at the last hurdle Membo was just clear of Paris and Gay Fashion. Paris attempted to go through on the rails after negotiating the last fence, but met with serious interference from Membo, who came right over on him. It was a desperate finish, however, the verdict going to Membo by half a length, with Paris ten lengthes in front of Gay Fashion. An inquiry was held after the race into the incident which occurred after the jumping of the last hurdle, when Membo crossed Paris. The stewards decided to reverse the placings, putting Paris first and Membo second. August Handicap
A surprise eventuated in the August Handicap, the poorly supported Arrowmir leading from barrier rise to return backers over three-parts of a score. Tickets for him totalled only £207, whereas Nancy Lee, £1,739, was a warm order and Arikinui, £935, apd Staghunter. £914, were also keenly sought after. The first start was a false one, but luckily the field did not go a furlong before they were brought to a halt. The second attempt proved a success, Arrowmir quickly forging his way to the van to lead Nancy Lee, Staghunter, Arikinui and Teri. At the false rail Arrowmir still held his place on the inside, while Arikinui, Staghunter and Teri were in close . r -Th e favourite made her effort inside the distance, but could not go on with it. Then Arikinui got on terms with the pacemaker, but in a desperate finish Arrowmir stuck on doggedly to secure the decision by three-parts of a length from Arikinui with Nancy Lee two lengths back in third place. Next to finish were Teri, Rational 11., Staghunter, Smithereens The Raider and Subdivision. Sumner Handicap H. Gray’s mount, Adventus, monopolised the betting in the Sumner Handicap, carrying £.1,662, as against High Gear, £842, and Air Laddie, £760. while Compris, £l2O, was at nearly double figures for his second dividend. Night Dew was quickest, out and at the end of a furlong led Duinblane, Air Laddie, Hounslow, Semper Paratus, High Gear and Adventus, but five furlongs from home Dumblane took the lead from Semper Paratus, Grattus Adventus. No material change was recorded as they swept round the turn, except that High Gear began to push through on the rails right in behind Dumblane and Semper Paratus. At the distance post High Gear got on terms with the leaders, forging on to beat the fast finishing Compris by a length. Dum-
blano took third honours two lengths away, and next were Semper Paratus. Kapina (who was slow to begin), Hounslow. Grattus and Adventus. Islington Handicap Favourites for the concluding event, the Islington Handicap, were Full Feather, £1.102, Town Major, £939. and Blimp, £773, but the race provided another good dividend in the Black Mint —Royal Game combination, £420. returning just short of double figures. Starshooter acted as pilot in the earlv stages from Royal Opera, Evening, Town Major, Tourist and Royal Game. At the end of two furlongs, however, Evening took up the running from Royal Opera and Starshooter, and at the top this trio were chased by Royal Game, Blimp, Taboo and Town Major. The latter came through smartly in the run to the turn and came round in behind Evening, Starshooter and Royal Game. A good finish took place, the outsider, Royal Game, lasting long enough to beat 1 own Major by a length. A similar distance back came Starshooter, followed by 1 aboo. Blimp and Evening.
