BLASTING ACCIDENT AT WAIWERA BRIDGE ASSISTANT-FOREMAN INJURED The premature explosion of a blasting charge blew off two fingers and the thumb of the right hand of Mr Samuel Laird, jun., during reconstruction work on the Waiwera Bridge yesterday. He is the assistant-fore-man on the job. While Mr. Laird was preparing some gelignite for blasting on founds tion work, the charge exploded in his hand. He was brought in to Auckland by the engineer for the Public Works Department there, and is in Mount Pleasant Private Hospital. He is reported to be progressing satisfactorily. Mr. Laird resides in Melbourne. The contract for the work of re placing the old one-way wooden bridge, which was in an unsafe condition, with a two-way concrete structure, was let by the Public Works Department to Mr. Stirling Rogers. The work of reconstruction has only recently been started.
