DEATH SENTENCE

MANLY FOUND GUILTY OF MURDER LAST STATEMENT FROM DOCK Special to THE SUN WANGANUI, Today. After three hours’ retirement, the jury returned a verdict of guilty yesterday against Herbert Frederick Manly, charged with the murder of Gladys Barrington Cromarty. The court room was densely packed, several women being among the spectators, some of them being quite young. As the jurymen filed to their seats a hush settled on the crowd, and in answer to the registrar’s formal demand, the foreman pronounced the words, “Guilty, your Honour.” The prisoner stood with bowed head, trembling violent^'. "And so say you all?” proceeded the registrar, following the court procedure. “Aye,” answered the jurymen in a body, all standing. In answer to the usual demand if he had anything to say, Manly answered in a voice so low that the words had to be called over by SeniorSergeant McLean: “Yes. Never at any time was it premeditated." Assuming the black cap, his Honour addressed the prisoner: “After a fair trial in which you were most ably defended and everything said for you that could be said, you have been found guilty of murder, a crime for which the law prescribes but one penalty. The sentence of the court is that you be taken from here to a lawful prison and from there to a place of execution and hanged by the neck till you are dead.” Manly was on the verge of collapse as the judge's quiet voice pronounced the penalty.
