JOCKEY BECOMES FAMOUS RODE AT SOUTHERN MEETINGS The Judicial Committee of the South Canterbury Hunt Club met recently (reports the “New Zealand Referee”) to consider the case of J. Callaghan, a recent arrival at Washdyke from 1 Southland, who rode Gold Town in two races at Waimate, and Peterline and Faloose at Washdyke, when he was not the holder of a jockey’s licence. It is understood that CaUaghan informed the officials at Waimate that he had been granted a licence, and as he had ridden there, his status was accepted at Washdyke. The position appears to be that he had been recommended for a licence for next season by the Canterbury District Committee, and had taken this as permission to ride. After investigating the circumstances, the Judicial Committee took no action, but the case will be reported in duo course to the District Committee. The horses Callaghan rode at Washdyke did not finish in the money, but at Waimate Gold Town was third in the Bluecliffs Steeplechase, and there will be no option but to deprive his owner of the money. The rule is mandatory on the point: “Every horse ridden by an unlicensed jockey shall be discjualifed for the race.” Callaghan’s application for a licence has not so far been granted by the Conference Committee.
