TARANAKI WINS BY 15 POINTS MATCH AT STRATFORD Special to THE SI N STRATFORD, Today. By 24 to 9 Taranaki defeated North Auckland in a scrappy game at Stratford yesterday. The North Auckland forwards were equal to, if not superior than, Taranaki, but the latter’s backs were better and speedier, In the first spell the visitors did most of the hooking, but the home side outshone them in this in the second half. The ground was in splendid order, and there was a fair attendance of spectators In the first spell the visitors played against the sun. Soon after the kickolf they were placed on the defensive, hut a long kick by Cherrington sent play back to half-way. Taranaki again attacked, but Sellars saved a dangerous situation. The first score, within 14 minutes, came through the home forwards taking charge, and Bond div ins* over. Taranaki 3. North Auckland 0. Baldwin, Walter and Guy were prominent -in a forward rush, and another score seemed likely, but Cherrington again saved, finding the line. A likely movement for the visitors was spoiled by Barrach holding on too long. This was followed by a promising move which was intercepted. North Auckland now secured well in tho scrums. Cherrington made a run through the opposition to score a good try. Taranaki 3, North Auckland 3. Play remained at half-way until Cherrington secured, heating two men, kicked high, followed up, and gathered the ball in again to score from another solo effort. North Auckland 6, Taranaki 3. Taranaki hooked from the scrum, Gudgeon dived round, and finding the opposing backs out of position crossed tho line, Collins converting. Taranaki 8, North Auckland 6. Just before half-time Watson made a fine run but, tackled by Sellars, passed to Hunt, who scored. Collins again converted. Taranaki 13, North Auckland 6. Early in the second spell Robinson knocked on, and from the ensuing scrum Gudgeon let Walter away. Walter passed to Robinson, who heat the visiting fullback, bringing the score to Taranaki 16, North Auckland 6. The visitors made some good attempts to score, but a strong defence held them up. After some up-and-down play, Hunt picked up near the visitors twenty-five, passed to Watson, who outpaced Sellars and Kerr, to score behind the posts, Collins converting. Taranaki 21, North Auckland 6 . North Auckland’s chance to reduce the discrepancy came soon when, from a free-kick 40yds out, Sellars kicked a fine goal. Taranaki 21, North Auckland 9. Crawford made a dash, but an inpass went wide. Later from a scrum he beat the field on the blind side, bringing the score to Taranaki 24, North Auckland 9.
