MUSIC EVERY DAY
NATIONAL FESTIVAL STARTS SATURDAY PROGRAMMES FOR ALL Never before in the history of the City have Aucklanders been afforded such an opportunity of hearing a wealth of music as that being offered during Music Week, commencing on Saturday evening at the Town Hall. Music Week is a national movement organised in an attempt to encourage greater musical appreciation on the part of the public, and also to revive the practice of concert-going, which of late years has fallen somewhat into disuse in competition with other forms of amusement. Of particular interest during Music Week will be the concerts by massed school choirs. The combined Catholic schools concert will be the first one of its kind ever presented in Auckland, and it will no doubt attract a big following. The State primary schools have also organised a big concert, and judging by the high standard shown by some of the individual choirs, the massed work should be particularly good. The secondary concert by pupils of the Epsom Grammar School, St. Cuthbert’s College and the Auckland Grammar School will also be one of the big features of the week. Other outstanding events will he a big miscellaneous concert on Wednesday evening, concert by the Royal Auckland Male Choir, and assisting artists, on Monday evening; a programme by the Bohemian Orchestra and Auckland Choral Society; the Maori concert by pupils of the two Maori colleges, and special band concerts on Sunday evening, and the following Saturday. Municipal music will also be represented by an organ recital by Mr. Maughan Barnett, city organist, on Sunday afternoon, and by a programme by the Municipal Choir and assisting artists on Saturday evening next. Every afternoon and evening first-class entertainments are being provided. Chamber music and various recitals, including demonstrations of dancing and eurythmics, will also be given at the Lewis Eady Hall in the afternoons, and community singing will also he held at the Town Hall on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, between 12.30 and 1.30 p.m. Season tickets are available from all music shops. CHOIR OF 500 COMBINED EFFORT BY CATHOLIC SCHOOLS HELPING MUSIC WEEK St. Benedict’s Hall, East Street, presented an animated appearance this afternoon when 500 children of the city Catholic schools arrived in special tramcars for a. massed practice in preparation for their Music Week concert in the Town Hall next Thursday afternoon. Altogether, 10 schools were represented, the children coming from districts as distant as Northcote, Devonport and Mount Albert. Five massed choruses were successfully rehearsed with the Rev. Father Terry and the Rev. Brother Henrick as conductors, and Miss N. Ormond accompanying at the organ and piano. Keen interest is being taken in this concert in Catholic circles throughout the city and suburbs, as it will he tho first combined Catholic schools' concert ever presented to an Auckland audience, and a recor'd attendance is expected at the Town Hall next Thursday afternoon.
