LYRIC THEATRE
"ITS A GREAT LIFE" Latest recruits to the talkies, the Duncan Sisters, famous stars of the London and New York stage, make their bow to the silver sheet in“ It's a Great Life,” now at the Lyric Theatre. They are a very bright pair, original in everything they do. The piquant charm of their personalities lifts this picture out of the ruck of similar stories of back-stage life. They sing half a dozen or more new songs, some of them catchy and melodious, others racily humorous. There are some gorgeous ensembles in technicolour, and a fashion display, also filmed in colour, that every woman will want to see. There is some very good fun, mingled with gentle satire, in the opening scene, which shows the employees of a big department store gathered for the morning “cheer song,” appropriately titled “Smile, Smile. Smile.” The story then flits to the vaudeville stage, where the Hogan Sisters and a piano-player present an act that “goes big” with the audiences. Then trouble intervenes; the act breaks up; humour retires to the wings, and pathos takes the stage for a while. But it is a cheerful tale in the main, and ends happily. Bright talkie shorts are also being shown
