Opening Day of National Carnival

Keen Racing at Riccarton

Special to THE SUN CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. "Weather conditions were fine but cloudy for racegoers who flocked to Riccarton today for \lie opening of the Grand National carnival. As was the case at the recent hunt meeting, the attendance was again poor, while recent heavy rain left the track holding. The totalisator handled £42,565 10s, against £62,086 10s. Hunters* Hurdles A small field set the ball rolling, only seven contestants facing the starter in the Hunters’ Hurdles. The Northerner, Airforce, £877, was a firm favourite, with Barrington, £536, and Akbar, £467, other fancies. Star Stranger 11. ran through quickly when they had settled down, and at the stands led Peterette, Barrington, Bladon, Akbar, Airforce, and Gold Mint. The leader still held his place down the back, where attending him was Bladon, Barrington, Peterette, Akbar, Airforce, and Gold Mint. At the nine furlongs Bladon made a poor jump, and went right back to last. Barrington closed on Star Stranger 11. crossing the top, and the pair drew right away, being seven lengths to the good | at the turn, where Airforce, Peterette, and Gold Mint were following. Barrington made a better jump than his companion at the final obstacle, and maintained a neck advantage to the post. Ten lengths behind Star Stranger 11. came Gold Mint, a neck ahead of Airforce. Peterette, Akbar, and Bladon followed. Trial Hurdles Llyn Du and Zippor were the medium of most support in the Trial Hurdles, carrying £1,020 and £1,016 respectively, with a leaning toward Paris, £ 649. Deluge showed out smartly at the start, and past the stands piloted Llyn Du, Zippor, Rigoletto, Gay Fashion, Paris, and Exide. The favourite clapped the second fence hard, going back to last as the field went out of the straight. Deluge still made play in the back stretch from Zippor, Rigoletto, (who lost his position at the nine furlongs), Gay Fashion, Exide and Llyn Du, who had begun to improve. Zippor closed on Deluge crossing the top, and they came into the straight closely attended by Gay Fashion, Paris, and Llyn Du, with little between any of them. Llyn Du ! took charge at the last fence, and, j resisting a strong challenge by Paris [ on the inside, scored nicely by half a length. A similar distance away third j was Gay Fashion, and four lengths | further followed Deluge, Zippor, and 1 Rigoletto. Cashmere Plate Betting in the Cashmere Plate took a wide range, Charmeuse, £939, Gustavo, £893, Painkiller, £784, and Rasouli, £739. all being well fancied. When they had singled out, Sleipner had a short call over Riri, Painkiller, Charmeuse, and Gustavo, but once on the course proper Painkiller was leading Charmeuse, Gustavo, Sleipner, Lambert, Kakara, Air Laddies, and Rasouli (on the outer). The last came with a strong challenge inside the distance, and wore the leaders down in convincing fashion, to win by two lengths from Air Laddie, who beat Charmeuse by the same margin. Kakara took fourth place, and then followed Miss Bradbury, Swiftray, Lambert, Painkiller, and Golden Pennant. Jumpers* Flat King’s Jest, £1,098, carried the bulk of the investments in the Jumpers’ Flat, while there was also free support for Fine Acre, £836, and West Dome, £B2l. The last-named drew the ace, and. first away, was never actually headed. Racing out of the straight, he was a length and a-half clear of Membo, with Shipshape, Troilus, Aberfeldy, Carinthia, King’s Jest, and Fine Acre following. Troilus and Aberfeldy moved up at the seven furlongs, to be in behind West Dome and Membo, and a furlong farther on King’s Jest made an appreciable improvement into fifth place. Across the top West Dome retained a slight lead over Shipshape, Troilus, Aberfeldy, and King’s Jest, and in similar order they turned for home. At the distance Aberfeldy threw out a strong challenge to West Dome, but the latter finished gamely under punishment to beat Aberfeldy by two lengths. Membo came from the middle of the field for third money, and next to cross the line were Shipshape, Fine Acre, King’s Jest, Troilus, and Carinthia. Enfield Steeples Odds on were laid on Radiac. in the Enfield Steeplechase, and his backers never had cause for anxiety. Support for him amounted to £1,608, as against Diana’s Lad, £999 and Double Soult, £461. Diana’s Lad and Taramoa were the early leaders, but the first of the stand double was fatal to the former, while Taramoa also had a life. The favourite then took the lead from Taramoa, Double Soult (who nearly fell at Cutts), Parader and Kaikahu. When the Kennels double was reached Radiac was out eight lengths clear of Taramoa and Double Soult. and by the time the straight came into view the gap was increased to easily 3 5 lengths. From this out it was easy for Radiac, who won in effortless style by 10 lengths. Taramoa was a further 15 lengths back third, with Parader next. Winter Cup The Winter Cup was responsible for a fine performance on the part of the winner, Toxeuma, who carried his 11.5 like a Trojan and won comfortably at the finish. He was third fancy, with £1,015, better siq>ported horses being Staghunter, £1,149 and Best Friend, £1,123, while Nancy Lee’s figures were £603. It was a fine start, all going away in line.- Momentarily Staghunter was at the head of affairs, but Arikinui ran through smartly from Staghunter, Havering, Toxeuma, Rascal, Starshooter, Topere and Best Friend. At the five furlongs, Staghunter hit j the front again to lead Arikinui. Starshooter, Ranelagh, Toxeuma, Rascal, Havering, Royal Game, Black Duke' and Best Friend. Here Nancy, Lee became prominent w’ith such effect she was on terms with Staghunter into the straight, with Rascal, Starshooter, Nancy Lee, Toxeuma and Taboo following. At the distance post several were disputing the issue, but Toxeumi came through strongly to go on and beat Nancy Lee by three lengths. Havering was third two lengths further away, and after him came Ranelagh. Tabo, Topere, Blimp, Staghunter, Black Mint and Best Friend. Avonhead Handicap After his good Trentham form, Hunting Call, £1,547, was a firm favourite for the Avonhead Handicap, there also being plenty of money for Desert Song, £1,169 and On Top. £ 827 (who was at a very liberal price.

Portray, On Top, Desert Song - , Hunting Call and Hounslow showed the way out of the barrier and at the half mile Portray had little over Grand Acre, On Top, Desert Song, Hunting Cry and Bulolo. Theer was nothing separating Portray and On Top as the home turn was negotiated, while right up following were Hunting Call, Grand Acre and Desert Song. A furlong from home On Top came through on the rails and kept up to his work resisting a challenge from Portray to win nicely by two lengths, with Desert Song a length back third. Next were Hunting Call, Compris, High Gear. Dumblane and Grand Acre. Itapina lost his rider, D. O’Connor, at the start.
