“NOT NORMAL”
YOUTH COMMITTED TO BORSTAL ADMITTED TWO THEFTS “He has recently had a nervous breakdown, and is not normal. When he has a job he is a good worker, but when he has nothing to do he gets into mischief.” So said the "Rev. Jasper Calder at the Police Court today, when Eric William L/anham, a labourer, aged 19, faced two charges of theft. Ho pleaded guilty to stealing a gramophone valued at £lO 10s, the property of R. S. Adams, on August 7. The same plea was entered to a further charge of stealing a bicycle valued at £4, the property of C. D. Barber, on the same date. “He has been given chances before, and has only got into fresh trouble,” said the probation officer, Mr. W. J. Campbell. Mr. Campbell said accused had been on probation, which had been extended for another six months following on a later offence. A term of reformative detention would do him good. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., sentenced accused to be detained' at the Waikeria Borstal Institute for a term not exceeding two years. On the second charge of theft, accused was convicted and discharged.
