THE FENCES RICCARTON COUNTRY TASK IN STEEPLECHASE The steeplechase fences at Riccarton are of the same size and dimensions os the standard -set and followed by Mr. P. D. McNab (racecourse manager) for some years past. The following is a list of the ten fences on the course and their measurements; — First Jump of National.—Brush fence, 4ft. 4in. high, 2ft. 6in. wide, near carriage paddock entrance. Stand Double.—Each light brush, 4ft. 3in. high. Cutts.—Brush, 4ft. lOin. high, 2ft. 9in. through. Sod Wall, near mile post.—3ft. Sinliigh, 4ft. across Top Post and Rail Fence.—3ft. 6in. high, 3ft. wide in front. Doubles.—First, post and fUSvfeJsJJ. ass broom- ilt. Biu„.
on top of sod wall, ditch 4ft. wide in front; second, post and rail and broom combined, 3ft. lOin. high, 34jds between the two fences. Big Sod Wall. —3ft. Siin. high, 4ft. at top, ditch, 2ft. 6in. wide in front. Brush.—4ft. 9in. high, 2ft. 9in. thick, situated at top of straight. There has been an impression that the last fence mentioned is the biggest on the course, but Cutts is higher and perhaps more formidable in construction. However, a straighter and longer run and a better take-off make the latter an easier obstacle to clear, and horses are not in the tiring stage, as is often the case with the top brush.
