VICE-REGAL BALL
THEIR EXCELLENCIES ENTERTAIN AT WELLINGTON BRILLIANT FUNCTION Government House, Wellington, presented a brilliant scene on Wednesday evening when their Excellencies the Governor-General and Lady Bledisloe gave their first ball in that city. The function was a particularly delightful one, and the house, which had been thrown open, upstairs and down, was fragrant with spring flowers. These were arranged in every available niche, the ballroom looking particularly attractive with groups of foliage plants, bamboo and ferns mingled with primulas and other flowers. Supper was served in the large dining-room, where beautiful silver and flowers looked very effective on the polished tables. Their Excellencies' table, with the official guests, was charmingly arranged with a handsome silver epergne of classic design, and pots of primulas and ferns alternately in silver bowls; high silver candelabra had candle effects for the electric lights with primula-tinted shades, and there were floating bowls of violets at either end of the table. There were supper tables at the end of the long corridor, in the entrance hall, and in some of the smaller rooms, all of which were decorated with a profusion of flowers. Their Excellencies entered the ballroom at nine o’clock. Lady Bledisloe wearing a handsome gown of ivory, tho bodice being of soft satin, embroidered to tone, in leaf pattern, and with deep points below the waist to the full skirt of fine net, which was long and pleated. Pearls and diamond ornaments were worn, and a beautiful fan of white ostrich feathers was carried. Mrs. Bathurst was in deep cream lace, with a coatee to match with a fur collar. Mrs. A. C. Bay wore gold lace over palo leaf-green georgette and a large tullo bow and scarf to tone. Miss Gillespie was froclced in pale rose pink taffeta, with a bouffant bow at the back. The presentation of debutantes to their Excellencies the Governor-Gen-eral and Lady Bledisloe preceded the ball, their reception taking place half an hour earlier.
