RICCARTON NOTES

SCHOOLING FENCES IN DEMAND RIDING ARRANGEMENTS Special to THE S-UN CHRISTCHURCH. Friday. The Riccarton tracks were crammed with activity this morning and nearly all horses that are to compete next week wero out doing strong work oji No. 1 grass track or the sand. The steeplechase course was open for jumping, but no trainer took advantage of the opportunity. Valves (E. Shaw) was the only National candidate to go over the brush fences, taking on five schooling obstacles in the centre of the course. He leaped the first four satisfactorily, but ran off at the last, the second of the double. lie pulled up sound and is evidently perfectly tit again. Shaw is to ride him. A Form Horso West Dome was sent over two of the schooling hurdles and jumped them well. The lield he will meet in the Hunters’ Hurdles on Tuesday is not strong, but lie seems to have two opponents in Airforce and Barrington who should hold him at the difference in weights. Mister Gamp, looking exceptionally well, was sent a fast round on the grass, doing the last mile in 1.51. A. E. Ellis, who is to ride him in the Grand National Hurdles, was in the saddle. Mister Gamp is in much better health than when ho was down here 12 months ago and although he has disappointed consistently this season there are more unlikely things happening than his winning next week. He will not race on the first day. Bold Jumping Corneroff (A. McDonald) did a round of the big fences, giving a bold exhibition of fast jumping. Airforce (A. McDonald) went over four hurdles at a sound pace, going well the whole way. Thurina (E. Shaw) gave a good exhibition of jumping over two hurdles. Neither Wharncliffe nor Lord Ranald will bo schooled over the steeplechase course prior to Tuesday. Trainer T. H. Gillett intends to finish them off with strong work on the fiat so as to take no risk of their going amiss. Although Radiate was allowed to drop out of the Grand National Steeples, he is being kept going in useful work and it is hoped that he will bo a competitor in the Beaufort Steeplechase on the second day. Best Friend, Nukumai, Tourist, Staghunter, Teri, Portray and Fine Acre arrived from the North this morning. Riding Engagements A. E. Ellis's engagements so far are: King’s Jest (Jumpers’ Flat), Toxeuma, Desert Song, Painkiller and Mister Gamp (Grand National Hurdles). A. S. Ellis will be. on Barrington, Membo, Double Soult and probably Gay Fashion. The Awapuni horseman, C. Broughton, will pilot Potbaform (who looks in excellent fettle) in the Avonhead Handicap. AV. Pascoe will ride Topere in the Winter Cup. H. Dulieu has been engaged for Shipshape in the Jumpers’ Flat, and he may also ride Rigoletto in the Trial Hurdles. H. Gray arrived from the North this morning. His first day’s mounts include Best Friend in the Winter Cup, also Hunting Call and probably Charmeuse in the Cashmere Plate. I. Tilson's only mounts so far are Star Stranger 11., Aberfeldy and Wharncliffe. T. Green will steer Pride in the Winter Cup and also Swiftray. Gold Mint and After Ten together leaped three hurdles without mistake. Llyn Du’s Showing Llyn Du (A. McDonald) did a round of four hurdles and made an attractive showing. He touched the last hurdle, but it was very lightly. Kapuna galloped twice round at a strong pace. He covered the last seven furlongs of the .first round in 1.43, and ran over the same ground the next time in 1.43 2-5. King’s Jest did easy work on the sand, moving scratchily. Radiac went twice round on the sand at a solid pace. This horse has never •been so well as he is now. In spite of being by Absurd, he can stay over any distance.
