PAPATOETOE WELFARE LEAGUE
Tht .Papatoetoe Welfare League met on Thursday' evening. Mr. S. J. E. Closey, who presided, gave a resume of an interview with Mr. Hunt, regarding a scheme of group settlement on small holdings, which had previously been considered by tlie league. It was decided to prepare a report upon suitable blocks adjacent to the industrial area of Otahuliu and Penrose. and to seek the co-operation of the heads of large firms. Tho Government’s proposals for the relief of unemployment were criticised by the members, who objected to the poll-tax on the grounds that the cost of collection would be excessive, that it Mould tend to reduce the response to charitable appeals, that the burden of relief would not be equitably distributed, and that the scheme excluded women. It was decided to send the league’s views to Mr. A. W. Hall, M.P. for Hauraki, for submission to the Government. A letter was received from the Onehunga Industrial Group, asking for the league's support in an effort to get a more direct route to Onehunga. It was claimed that such a thoroughfare would relieve the excessive motor traffic on the Great South Road.
AVith the object of assisting local unemployment, tlie league decided to act in the capacity of a voluntary labour bureau, and the secretary was autliorised to take the necessary steps. AVith the progress of subdivision in the district, the league considered ♦permission should be sought from the Government to sell the numerous small areas set aside as reserves, and it was decided to urge the Papatoetoe Town Board to make representation to the Government on the subject. Mr. J. Franklin, chairman of the Parks Committee of the Town Board attended and gave a resume of work carried out by the board on the various recreation grounds.
