WON’T PAV MORE

O.T.C. MEMBERSHIP FEES CHEAP RACING PROVIDED At the annual meeting of the Queensland Turf Club recently, a proposal that members’ subscriptions should be increased from £3 3s to £5 5s yearly was turned down by a large majority. Air. J. Clark, who moved the motion, said if it were carried it would add £ 1,780 to the yearly revenue. It was, ho considered, a slur on members that they should get admission to Ascot for sixpence a day, whereas other ordinary racegoers had to pay 12s (men) and 9s 4d (women). The chairman (Mr. C. A Morriss), replying to a question respecting the findings of the Royal Commission on racing, said the committee had considered the findings at length, and deemed it advisable to take no action at present.

TORE FOR AUSTRALIA

"'’HITE FANG TO TRAVE* ROYAL PARADE TOO? It is understood that W. Griffith will teave shortly for Australia with White Fang. It is quite on the cards that Roya Parade will journey a'cross the Tasman with him (writes “Hermit”). Royal Parade’s autumn form was ;ood enough to suggest his paying his way to the Commonwealth and White Fang has already won over there. Both White Fang and Royal Parade won race? on the second day of the last Avondale meeting just over three months ago.

“TOO MUCH HUMILITY”

TRAINERS AND JOCKEYS EARNINGS AND TAXATION While on the subject of racing and the knocks it is. and will be, receiving during the new season, it might be as well to point- out to trainers and jockeys that their earnings are likely to bo considerably affected by taxation (says a Wellington writer). If they submit calmly and without protest to tho increased burden, it will be taken as a sign that they agree to what is proposed. Meetings of protest in the larger centres, with resolutions forwarded to the member for the district would show that they are not going to take things lying down. Surely those so vitally affected have sufficient spirit to help themselves, and not leave all to the racing authorities. There is such a thing as too much humility.

THE STUD BOOK ISSUED THIS WEEK SUPPORT WARRANTED Volume XI. of the New Zealand Stud Book will be on issue this week. It comprises a comprehensive volume of 58'0~ pages, containing nearly twice the matter of any previous issue. It is a monument to the patience and industry of the compiler. Air. A. H. Bristed, and he deserves the thanks of all who have occasion to rely upon this essential production. Tho Stud Book in the past has never paid. the burden having to be carried mainly by the Racing Conference This is largely due tr the dilatory attitude of clubs, owners, and others connected with the sport, and their lack of support for what really to racing is a7i indispensable aid (comments a Wellington writer). --Only ten clubs in all the Dominion subscribe to the Stud Book—a sorry state of affairs—while owners and trainers are equallv indifferent.

The value of thoroughbred stock is greatly enhanced by inclusion in the Stud Book, and with such a valuable market as Australia at our back door it will pay owners. breeders, and others to take a more lively interest in the latest result of the editor’s laborious work.
