RAILWAY ECONOMIES

SERVICE ON PICTON LINE CURTAILED ANNUAL SAVING OF £4,000 Press Association WELLINGTON, Tuesday. A further item of railway economy is announced by the Minister of Railways, tlie Hon- W. A. Veitcb- It has been decided to modify the services on the Picton-Wharanui line by somewhat drastically curtailing train running with the object of effecting an annual saving oT about £4,u00. The new time-tab.e will provide ample facilities for gcods traffic, and allowance is being made for special trains during periods of peak traffic. It is proposed to withdraw the station staff from Ward station. Passenger traffic between Picton and Blenheim has been seriously reduced through the opposition of road services, and it is anticipated that no further serious loss can accrue, though even if there is a further decline the estimated saving of £4.000 would stili be effected.

A summary of the revenue and expenditure for this section of the line, lor the year ended March 31, 1930, shows a loss on working of £8,389 and a loss, including interest, of £36,913. The curtailed services arc to operate forthwith.
