THISTLE CLUB DISCLAIMS RESPONSIBILITY UPHELD BY BOARD Tho muddle over the Chatham Cup final was discussed by the Control Board of the Auckland Football Association last evening, following a strong protest by Thistle delegates at the reported attitude of the New Zealand Council in placing the blame for Thistle’s default to Petone on the Auckland Club. Tho Thistle delegates said that after Thistle had agreed to Petone’s request, through tlio council, to postpone the match from August 2 to August 9, it was. hardly fair to expect Thistle to fulfil the fixture on the original date. Tho chairman, Mr. A. Menzies, expressed the view that the New Zealand Council intended to have the fixture played on August 2. He therefore did not agree with the council’s attitude in forwarding Petone’s request for a postponement until the following fcs3.t--urday. The general opinion of members of tho board supported the chairman’s views. It was considered that the New Zealand Council’s attitude in not stating definitely that the fixture would have to be played on August 2, was the cause of the misunderstanding. 1l was finally decided to write to the New Zealand Council on these lines and refusing to accept any responsibility lor the game not being played. J. Williamson, of Corinthians, who was sent off the field in the match against Tramways last Saturday, could not appear to answer the charge, and the matter was deferred, the player to be informed that he must appear before a special sub-committee later in the week. The case of J. Mellor, Abel's Club, who was ordered off in the second grade match against United on Saturday, was also deferred. SOCCER COUNCIL RECENT AUCKLAND INCIDENT Press Association WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The council of the New Zealand Football Association at its meeting received a letter from the Auckland Association regretting the publicity given the council’s action regarding the conduct of certain players and the action taken by Auckland. The council expressed the view that the punishment inflicted was inadequate, but Auckland pointed out that one player involved, McElligott, committed no offence and went off the field under a misapprehension and could not be punished. He was not ordered off. Mr. Campbell referred to the original report from the Auckland Association, which stated that McElligott did leave the field in error, but said, further: “McElligott advised the captain to take his team off. the field.” It was decided to refer the Auckland Association to this statement in the report. The South Auckland Association wrote that application had been made to the trustees of the Herbert Smith Trust fund, Hamilton, for a shield for the South Island primary schools tournament (heavy-weights) and a cup for the light-weights and cups of lesser value for school associations at Invercargill, Dunedin, West Coast and Christchurch.
