TYPOGRAPHICAL UNION A credit balance of £1,479 was revealed at the half-yearly meeting of the Auckland Typographical Union. The membership, too. was satisfactory. The president, Mr. S. Learning, presided over a good attendance. According to the half-yearly balance sheet the receipts forvjhe past six months had been £43S_ and with the balance in hand from the previous half-year of £1.468, the total was £1,906. The credit balance was £1.479, art increase of £ll for the half-year. It was reported that 25 members joined the union during the six months, - while 17 left the district or the trade, leaving a total membership of 382. an increase of eight. The question of the excessive importation of printed matter into New Zealand was briefly discussed, and the following motion was unanimously agreed to:—“In view of the extremely dull state of the printing trade throughout the Dominion, and the consequent large number o£ unemployed tradesmen, this meeting of the Auckland Typographical Industrial Union of Workers strongly urges the Government to increase the duties on imported printed matter. Nearly £ 1,000,000 worth of printed matter, apart from books, is imported into New Zealand each year, and this matter can be efficiently produced in this country and at reasonable prices. A copy of this resolution is to be forwarded to the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Labour Party, the Leader of the Opposition and to the Minister of Industries and Commerce.”
