Lord Lonsdale Reminiscent
Lord Lonsdale opened at Pontypridd, Glamorgan, on May 29, his three days' tour in Wales to raise £I,OOO for endowing a Lonsdale bed at the Cardiff rnfirmary. in a reminiscent speech, according to a London writer, at a civic reception given in his honour, he recalled how, under an assumed name, he beat the great John L. Sullivan, and that he had also beaten T. P. Weston, the American champion walker, by doing 100 miles in 17 hours 43 minutes. Remarking that he had had a roving life. Lord Lonsdale said that in 1874 he was driving sheep and cattle in Canada, lie had roughed it in many parts of the world. This story does not say how he “beat” John JL. Sullivan.
