N.Z. BOWLERS RETURN

WON FOUR CHAMF lONSHIPS HOSPITALITY IN FIJI New Zealand bowlers made names for themselves in Suva, Fiji, at the 1 South Pacific bowling tournament. A party of 22 bowlers and their wives returned to Ajckla id this morning by the Tofua with tales of enthusiasm regarding tte hospitality of Fiji residents. New Zealand won the Sout a PaoLfl* Peunant. beating Australia and Fiji Mr. J. It. Nash, of Auckland, carried off the singles championship and th** 1 open riuks championship was won by Messrs. H. L. Hay. J. Thoms.m, F. S. i Stevenson and D. H. Thomson, of In j vercargilL Messrs. A. E. Br »ad an.i G. T. Stevens, Invercargill, won the j championship pairs. GROWING POPULARITY Mr. D. H. Thomson, of Invercargill, who was manager of the team, said that 14 Southland bowlers made the trip and were accompanied by their wives. Four went from Christchurch and four from Auckland. The winter tournament at Suva was growing in popularity and enabled visitors to enjoy both good bowling and an excellent sight-seeing tour. The Suva bowling greens, which are on reclaimed land, were in good order and set in glorious tropical surroundings. Mr. Thomsen and other members of the parry spokwith enthusiasm of the hospitality i accorded them and their wives. On** ; of the most interesting trips was to ! see the famous fire-walkers of Beqa. During the tournament the news of | Sir Joseph Ward’s death reached j Suva. Play was stopped and flag^ 1 were flown half-mast. The president of the Suva Club made suitable referI ence to the late Prime Minister and Mr. D. Thomson replied on behalf of the New Zealanders.
