MANGANI’S FINE EFFORT RACING AT RICCARTON Special to THE SUN - CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The Christchurch Hunt Club's Steeplechase meeting was held today. The weather was fine btu cold and cloudy. The attendance was fair and the course was in good order. The totalisator handled £10,783 10s, compared with £13,879 last year. Kennels Hurdles West Dome and Star Stranger 11. were the first away from the bander and led out of the straight from Gold Mint. A faulty jump live furlongs from home sent West Dome back to a had last and he was well behind Star Stranger 11. and Gold Mint. West Dome quickly closed up the gap again and was up behind Star Stranger 11. and Gold Mint before they reached the straight. He was first to the last fence and drew away to win by four lengths from Gold Mint, who had to be shaken up to hold off Star Stranger 11. by a neck. Marco Polo was a long way back fourth. Lawford Steeplechase Peterette, Kuirange and Wairio were ! the early leaders, but Wairio went up | to Peterette going into the back, with Kuirange some distance behind. Illuminator fell at the stands double. Peterette, Wairio and Kuirange were on
terms after crossing tlie double brush nt the six furlongs, with Seaboy well back. But Kulranse went to tho front from Peterette and Wairio. These three fell in succession at the second to last fence, and Seaboy also came to grief. Seaboy was first remounted and came home a winner by a furlong. Wairio was next caught and returned second money. Kulrange and Peterette both fell again at the last fence, after being remounted, but were caught again and Kulrange eventually took third money. LongbeacH Hurdles Gala Day, Troilus, Oriflamb and Craig more were tlv> early leaders, but Manga ni was close up behind them along the back, where Troilus went to the front. Majigani improved on the turn, and was just behind Troilus as they swung into the straight, with Gala Day, Craigmore and Mountain Guide next. Once over the last fence Mangani took the upper hand and passed Troilus to win by half a length, with Mountain Guide finishing well in third place four lengths farther back. Oraigmore was fourth and then came Gala Day. Oriflamb and Mombo. Maiden Stakes A good start was effected, and when the field came on to the course proper the order was Tray Bond. Painkiller, Homecoming, Swift Ray, Shatter and Memories. Tray Bond and Painkiller drew out at the false rail, and fought out the finish, the latter doing the better to beat her stable mate by two lengths, with Shatter another two lengths back third and Memories fourth. Next were Muff, Swiftray, Locksley, A) Jolson. Jael and Home* coming. Homeby Steeplechase R&diac, Kaikahu. Snowfall, Kapuna and Wharncliffe was the early order. Kaikahu fell after half a mile and Kapuna and Radiac were well clear of Snowfall' and Wharncliffe passing the stands. The pair were still together till half a mile from home, but Radiac’s jumping was much the cleaner. He ! took the van at the second to last obstacle and leaping the last fence perfectly came home an easy winner by four lengths from Kapun.-;. Snowfall. I*oo yards away, had to be bard ridden to hold off Wharncliffe. Brabazon Handicap Hounslow, Subdivision, Arch Arrow nnd Starshooter were the earlv leaders, but after the field had gone a furlong Subdivision came to the front from Starshootcr. Hounslow and Toxeuma. Subdivision led into the straight from Toxeuma, who lodged a challenge and quickly settled the intentions of the rest, going on to an easy two lengths’ victory from Star Shooter, who was three lengths better than Hounslow. Lord Thomond wa,s fourth and Arch Arrow and Rascal next. Hunters’ Plate Moratorium was first to move out, but when the field settled down Star Stranger 11. was showing the way to Craftsman. Ka irness, Commcntor, Bladon and Moratorium, with Fresh Breeze and West Dome last. Star Stranger 11. led into the straight from Commentor, Moratorium and Fairness, but then Commentor quickly took command and looked to have tile race won, when West Dome appeared with a late challenge on the outside and got the verdict by a bead. Fresh Breeze also came from the ruck with a fast run and was anly a neck further back third. Moratorium was a. poor fourth, with Star Stronger 11.. Fairness and Bladon next Flying Hack On Top was first to break the line and was followed by Charmeuse and Desert Song. On Top led on to the course proper, but Desert Song challenged him at the fales rail and headed him at the distance. Charmeuse tried for an opening between the two in front of her but was disappointed till too late and could get no nearer than a length to Desert Song at the judge, with ono and a-half lengths back to On Top.
