STEAMER IN GALE
KAHIKA DRIVEN 250 MILES . OFF COURSE TOWED SAFELY TO GISBORNE Press Association GISBORNE, Today. Encountering a strong southerly gale off Castle Point on Sunday afternoon. the Kahika. bound from Gisborne to Dunedin, was unable to make headway owing to a shortage of coal. The vessel, which in in exceptionally light trim, was driven north more thau 250 miles off her course. The storm dropped on Thursday morning, the Kahika being a few miles- north of East Cape. She proceeded to Hicks Bay without further mishap and wirelessed for assistance. The Wainui had been dispatched on Wednesday night and successfully towed the Kahika to port, arriving at Gisborne last night. The Kahika received a severe buffeting during the drift north, heavy seas frequently beating over her stern. One tremendous wave stove in the starboard forward bulwark and flooded the crew's quarters. Otherwise no damage was done. The crew were placed on rations after the second day. inned meat providing the chief food. The supplies of bread ran low while the butter was all used. Captain Evan 3 stated that he would not like to meet a worse gale, but despite this none of the crew suffered injury. The vessel was never in immediate danger. The Kphika replenished her bunkers todr*v and is expected to sail tonight for Dunedin.
