TO AID SETTLERS
DEVELOPING 2,000 ACRES NEW SCHEME PROPOSED A scheme whereby it will act as agents for intending settlers with limited capital, is under consideration by the New Zealand Land Settlement and Development League. A detailed report of the scheme has been prepared, and when arrangements have been finalised, the co-operation of the Gov ernment will be sought. ' The proposal is to secure from the Crown the right to take up and improve a b'ock of land of 2,000 acres. It will be divided into suitable holdings of about 60 acres, and all the heavy work in tho settlement requiring machinery will be done by central working con tractors. A central development commit tee will be set up to decide on ques tions of policy and to make oreliznin ary arrangements. Before active development steps would be taken In connection with any issue, applications would be called foi from persons' qualified to farm such places and available for a Government advance. The applicant would be required to be able to pay £3OO. £IOO of which would be paid over to the league and the balance placed in the hands of trustees approved by the Cen tral Development Committee The prospective purchaser would choose his own piece of land, but all improvement operations would be carried out by the league as agent for the pur chaser At a meeting of the executive com mittee of the I>and Settlement and Development League yesterday a subcommittee consisting of Messrs. W. J Holdsworth. M G. McArthur. A. A. Ross. D Donaldson W Fraser and N G. Gribble. was appointed to further consider the details of the scheme.
