MARCH OF PROGRESS

REPORT FOR LAST YEAR

The report* of the Auckland Racing Club, to be presented at the annual meeting on August 11, congratulates members upon another successful year. Prize-money contributed by the club amounted to £59.000, while in addition £340 was contributed in sweepstakes by owners. The four meetings held showed satisfactory results, although the winter meeting was somewhat marred by inclement weather conditions. In accordance with the committee's intentions, expressed last year, the club’s finances had received close attention. with the satisfactory result that the bank overdraft now stood at C 8.548, as against £22,668 lust year—a reduction of £14,120. The committee hoped that, at the end of the ensuing season, the financial position wcuM show still further improvement. a sum of £12.070 had been written off buildings and plant- and a balance of £3.839 had been added to capita) account. It was with regret that the conn**- - tee had to record further removals by death during the past year, including' Sir George Clifford, who was a lift ' member of the club, and for so manyj years presided over the New Zealand" Racing Conference, and whose position in the racing world would be difficult to fill, also Messrs. Nolan had been nominated for the respective offices of president and vicepresident. and being the only nominees, they would be declared elected. Messrs. C. A. Brown. F. Earl. K.C.. AY. Claud Motion. M. M. McCallum. Oliver Nicholson (retiring committeemen). Thomas Irapey. and E. A. Price had been nominated for the five seats on the committee, and Messrs. M. J. Lynch, W. C. Ring, G. A. AYynyard (retiring stewards) and Colin W. Anderson for the three seats on the stewards. In each case the nomination? exceeding the number of seats available, a ballot wrould be necessary. THE BALANCE SHEET The balance sheet shows that the receipts for the year totalled £40,382, the principal item being revenue from race meetings, £35,674. Members’ subscriptions yielded £2.715; members’ motor stalls. £159; rents and grazing, £807; track fees, £485; and tea kiosk, £540. Items of expenditure included salaries and pensions. £2,301; wage*. £9,386; interest. £1,848; land-tai, £1,576; rates (including water*. £2,284: repairs and maintenance, £1.487; conference levies. £1,305; and donations. £ 540. After writing off £12,070 depreciation on buildings, plant, tea kiosk, improvements. ete„ tho balance of £3,839 was transferred to capital account. The assets are shown at £143,327, including racecourse, £35.346; Shortland Street property, £3,500; buildings (grandstands, etc.). written down from £70,100 to £65,550; totalisator buildings and plant, written down from £19,500 to £17.500; fencing, furniture, dining-room plant, turnstiles, working plant, etc., written down from £9,865 to £5,300; tea kiosk, including plant and furniture. written down from £8,154 to £6,500; improvements account, written down from £4.3<Hi to £2,000: and district training tracks. £2,250. On tlie liabilities side, capital is shown at £124,756: Bank of New Zealand, £8,548; and loans and deposits. £9.533. Several New Zealand horses were engaged. Mr. AV. G. Stead’s AVhelk ran third in the Maiden Handicap (6 furlon )- Mr. J. Paterson's Full Measure was second in the Nursery Handicap, second division (6 furlongs), and Becalmed third in the Canipsie Handicap <9 furlongs) .

King Elysian was killed in the hurdle race.
