TWISTING THE ROPE.
NEW TAXATION PROPOSAL A CAUSTIC CRITICISM “Hermit,” of the Hawke’s Bay “Herald,” on the new totalisator taxation proposals: Racing clubs at the present time must feel very much like the man who said he felt relieved when a sentence of death was passed on him. He had been worrying as to what the verdict would be, and what was going to happen him, but after the sentence was passed he did not need to worry any more for he knew. The racing clubs are in much the same position today. For years they have been seeking relief from what they considered a heavy burden of taxation which was throttling the clubs. They have got their relief in an extra twist of the rope, and tightening of the pressure, so that they are able to realise that for many of them the sentence of death has already been passed, if the Government’s taxation proposals with respect to the totalisator revenue are carried.
