The Communist menace has developed to an alarming extent in the Kiangsi and Hunan provinces during the last few days. Vagrant bands suddenly coalesced forming a well-disciplined and wellequipped army of 10,000 strong, which is reported to have captured Nanchange, the capital of the Kiangsi Province, and is advancing to within 15 miles of Kiukiang, a holiday resort of foreigners. British, American and Japanese gunboats are helping'in evacuating the nationals from Changsha, 25 miles away, at which point Government troops severely defeated the Communists.
