Enjoyable Reception

JOINT FUNCTION ARRANGED BY LYCEUM CLUB AND NATIONAL COUNCIL CONFERENCE DELEGATES ARE GUESTS AT INTERESTING EVENING At the Lyceum Club rooms a very largely attended reception, given jointly My the Lyceum Club and the Auckland branch of the National Council of Women to the Australian and New Zealand delegates of the Pan-Pacific Conference, to be held in Honolulu shortly, took place last evening.

The rooms were decorated with ferns and bowls of spring flowers. Airs. W. 11. I’arkes, president of the club, on behalf of the members welcomed the guests and said it had been their pleasure to welcome the returning delegates from the last conference two years ago. A wonderful band of women who wero setting forth on a great mission of peace, was how Aliss Carnachan president of the National Council of Women (Auckland branch), who her welcome, described the delegates. A very enjoyable feature of the evening was the welcome given by members of the Akarana Alaori Association. Airs. Arita Clark made a brief speech, after which was sung the chant of welcome and a party of girls from the Victoria Girls’ College sang the Wakii poi. Airs. Kailiau delighted those present by singing ‘He Tu'ngi Nale Hoea” (The Wail of the Oar), translating it tor the benefit of her hearers. The deputy-chairman of the Australian delegation, Dr. Constance Davey, thanked the National Council for the wonderful hospitality which had been shown them. She mentioned the disadvantages under which they had attended the former conference. They had brought back a mandate to Australian women to prepare for this conference, and so they had organised the Pan-Pacific Co-operative Committee to collect the necessary materialMiss Eleanor Aloore, of Melbourne, secretary to the delegation, in a brief speech spoke of the great opportunity this conference would give for helping to a better understanding of the people of the Pacific. Aliss Elsie Andrews, who spoke on behalf of the New Zealand delegates, said she liked to feel that the idea of such conferences as the one to which they were going was originated b.v the late Mr. Aiark Cohen, who albad the welfare of women and children at heart.
