DISCHARGE OPPOSED
BANKRUPT PAINTERS’ AFFAIRS “Bankrupt’s statements are not altogether satisfactory, and I will have to investigate further. His case is one in which he should not obtain his discharge until he makes some effort to pay his creditors.” This statement was made by the Official Assignee, Mr. A. W. Watters, yesterday afternoon at a meeting of creditors of Allan Lawrence, painter, of Devonport. Bankrupt s schedule showed liabilities of £7O 15s owing to unsecured creditors and assets nil. Bankrupt stated that fie had filed his petition in bankruptcy as he was unable to pay his debts. A judgment had been made against him for an order of approximately £sl and his appeal had failed. His other debt** totalled about £2O. During the past three years he had been more unemployed than not. He had joined the Samoan Police Force but, had been discharged when it was disbanded He attributed his failure to hard times and the scarcity of work during the last I*> months. Replying to the Official Assignee, bankrupt said he was earning £4 19s a week, with occasional overtime, but he could not make any offer to his creditors as he did not know how long the work would last. After bankrupt had been questioned at length regarling liis operations, a resolution recommending that his discharge should be opposed until he made an offer to his creditors was passed.
