SCHOLAR HONOURED
FAREWELL TO MR. P. C. MINNS FUNCTION AT NORTHCOTE That Mr. P. C. Minns, one of the two New Zealand Rhodes scholars, would worthily uphold the prestige of the Dominion, was expressed by many speakers at a public farewell in honour of Mr. Minns at Northcote last evening. Tho Mayor of Northcote, Mr. A. E. Greenslade, presided over a large audience, representative of all sections of the community. Among those present wero Mr. W. J. Wernham, principal of tho Northcote Junior High School, Mr. H. J. D. Mahon, headmaster of the Auckland Grammar School, Professor R. M. Algie, representing the Auckland University College, Mr. M. R. O’Shea., registrar, representing the Auckland University College Council, Mr. .Alex Harris, M.P., Waitemata, Mr. H. G. It Mason, M.P., Auckland Suburbs, Mr. W. Wilson, town clerk of Northcote, Mr. J. W. Williamson, Mayor of Takapuna, and Air. H. Frost, chairman of the Auckland Rugby Union. Apologies for absence were received from tho Minister of Education, the Hon. H. Atm ore, the Rt. Hon. J. G Coates, the Hon. E. W. Alison, M.L.C., Sir George Fowlds. Mr. H. S. W. King, chairman. Board of Governors of the Technical College, Mr. D. W. Dunlop, secretary. Auckland Education Board, and Mr. J. P. McPhail, Mayor of Birkenhead. Tho scholastic career of the guest of the evening from his start at the Northcote School to his final attainments at the Auckland University College were traced by various speakers, who prophesied a brilliant career for Mr. Minns. Mr. Alex. Harris. M.P. for Waitemata. also conveyed on behalf of the Government its sincere felicitations on Mr. Minns’s success and wished him God-speed. Mr. Harris read a letter from the Prime Minister, the Hon. G. \V. Forbes, stating that as Mr. Minns had expressed his intention of returning to New Zealand he pledged him that an educational appointment would bo offered him on his return. The chairman then presented Mr. Minns, on behalf of the residents and other well-wishers, with a wallet containing a substantial sum of money. Mr. Minns on rising to speak was received with loud applause. He sin-* cerely thanked all the speakers and those present for their good wishes, and assured them that he would ptmost to uphold the honour of New Zealand.
