“BACKWARD MENTALLY”

MAORI YOUTH ADMITTED TO PROBATION TWO OFFENCES COMMITTED “It would seem that the girls were just as bad as you, perhaps worse,’’ remarked Mr. Justice Herdman in the Supreme Court this afternoon when admitting a native, John Ngaphi, to two years’ probation for attempted carnal knowledge of two Maori girls. Mr. N. V. Hodgson said the prisoner, who was a 19-year-old stable-hand, was somewhat backward mentally. The two girls concerned were nearly 1? and rather precocious. THEFT OF CHEQUE Albert Joseph Vance Ryan pleaded guilty to the theft of a cheque for £2l 4s 7d and to uttering it and was remanded until Friday for sentence.
