APPRENTICE’S APPEAL
UPHELD BY THE COURT The appeal of A. Prentice, a plumber's* apprentice, against his dismissal by his employer, Arthur Frederick Hazleman, was upheld by the Arbitration Court today. On behalf of the employer, Mr. Newberry said that there was nothing whatever against the boy, but the position was that his employer was unable to find work for the lad. Every effort had been made by the employer to have the boy transferred to another employer, but without success. Hazloman had employed the boy as long as possible, but there was now £2O in wages owing to the lad, and for which the employer had been fined. His Honour stated that where the employer could not find work for an apprentice he could allow* himself to be proceeded against for darpages for breach of the apprenticeship contract. The judge added that so far as the Court was concerned it was a “rubber stamp” decision. The secretary of the Plumbers’ Union, Mr. J. Clark, announced that there was no opening for an apprentice at present.
