BURIED IN RUINS

CRIES LEAD TO RESCUE IN ITALIAN ’QUAKE DEATH ROLL NOW 2,142 United P.A.—By Tetcgrraph—Copyright Reed. 11.55 a.m. ROME, Sunday. Instances of remarkable escapes in the earthquake are now being revealed. Soldiers found three sisters at Melfi aged six, seven and eight years, who had lain for three days beneath the debris. The eldest had both legs broken. Rescuers at Lacedonia heard faint cries and discovered beneath a capboard a four-months-old baby. Both its parents were dead nearby. The Prime Minister, Signor Mussolini, has received a report to tbs effect that 2,142 people are known to have been killed in the earthquakes in Southern Italy and 4,551 to have been injured. The list is still incomplete. King Victor Emmanuel traversed the ruins of the village of Lacedonia. At the end of the main street he found an old man weeping inconsolably. He was the only survivor of an entire family, his 24 children and grandchildren having perished at Melfi.. His Majesty was also deeply moved at the sight of a girl who had just been taken out of the ruins of her home with both legs severed. Ten people were unearthed who had been buried since Wednesday. It is hoped that most of them will survive.
