EAST COAST BRIDGES
PROBLEMS OF FINANCE Prom Our Oven Correspondent OPOTIKI, Today. For some years there has been a strong agitation to have the remaining unbridged streams on the OpotikiGisborne main highway attended to. There still appears to be a deadlock between the Main Highways Board and the Waikohu County Council over the question of financing the undertakings. The Otoko Stream requires three bridges—one almost under the big railway viaduct and one on each side of the Otoko Hill. With heavy rain the stream rises very rapidly and tlie users of the road either have to raii their cars or wait until the stream goes down. The highway through th*Waikohu County is used mainly by motorists, and county ratepayers justly claim that they should not have to pay for the cost of the bridges. Sometime ago it was thought that arrange • ments would be made to bridge the Otoko this summer, but the Waikohu Council has made no provision on this year’s estimates for the bridges. The best offer to date from the Highways Board toward the cost of bridging the Otoko is £3 for £l. In the meantime the unfortunate users of the road will have to put up with the occasional delays caused by floods.
