ALTAR ADORNED
CHURCH AT FREEMAN’S BAY Four figures of angels carved in oak for the adornment of the altar were dedicated last evening in the St. Thomas’s Church, Freeman’s Bay, and proved a most interesting example of ecclesiastical art, designed and executed in Auckland. At the instance of the vicar, -the Rev. A. Russell Allerton. changes wefe made in the arrangement of the altar in order that it might conform with the type of such structures that were usual in mediaeval England. As paxt of the scheme, four wooden- posts were erected about the altar table, one at each corner, the pair at each side carrying a curtain. The cost of the work was borne by Mrs. Schischka of Shelly Beach- Road, as a memorial of her daughter. Rewa. The adornment of the altar has now been completed by placing on each post the kneeling figure of an angel, about one foot in height and bearing a metal candle stick. The figures were designed by Mr. F. Middlebrook. who also supervised the making of the posts. The carving was done by Mr O. B. Gibson, of Mount Eden. The cost was defrayed by Mrs. Schenk, of Harbour Street, in memory of her daughter, Henrietta.
