PAKURANGA HUNT FIXTURE ON AUGUST 23 ENTRIES DUE NEXT FRIDAY The next race meeting in the Auckland Province will be the annual fixture of the Pakuranga Hunt Club at Ellerslie on August 23 four weeks from tomorrow. This popular gathering will serve to bridge the gap of 11 weeks since the last race meeting was held in the City. The club has drawn up a splendid programme, framed on practically the same lines as that staged so successfully last year. In stake money £2,400 will be distributed, an average of £3OO for each of the eight events. The principal events on the card are the Pakuranga Hunt Cup (steeplechase handicap), of £6OO, run over the three miles course (twice over the hill) at Ellerslie, the Jellicoe Handicap, of £450, 1* miles, for the middle distance horses; and the open sprint, the Dunedin Handicap, of £350, six furlongs. There are four races—just half of the programme—restricted to qualified hunters. In addition to the Hunt Cup, there are the Hunters’ Steeplechase and Hunters’ Hurdles, not to overlook the Ladies’ Bracelet, which provides for amateur horsemen. The four other events on the flat, two open and two hack, will be more popular upon this occasion, for the minimum will be seven stone, as against nine stone last year. This provision will probably be the means of inducing numerous owners to step out their tliree-year-olds. Nominations ar© due on Friday next, August 1, at the office of the Auckland Racing Club, with Mr. W. S. Spence, who is the secretary for the rac<; meeting. It is probable that, as in past years, a parade of two-year-olds will be staged prior to the first race. The Programme The following is the programme drawn up: Greenmount Hunters’ Steeplechase Handicap, of £2OO (winner to receive £140), about 2A miles.
