Seven Rides For A. E. Ellis

Good Mounts Tomorrow WILL HE CATCH H. GRAY? M. Gray arrived in Wellington on Wednesday on his way to Timaru to ride at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting there on Saturday. Gray has done a lot of hard travelling of late. After riding at Trentham he motored to Gisborne, motored from Gisborne to Palmerston North after the racing on the East Coast, went on to Auckland by train, back from Auckland to Wellington, on to Lyttelton by steamer, thence by car or train to Timaru. Gray’s lead of four over A. E. Ellis in the contest for the jockeys’ championship is not as good a margin as it may look to some, as Ellis is likely to have some particularly good riding at the South Canterbury Hunt gathering tomorrow. Besides his mounts in the flat races, it is probable he will secure the riding of the jumpers which in the ordinary course would be ridden by his brother, A. S. Ellis, such as Membo in the Hack Hurdles, Barrington in whichever of the steeplechases he contests, and Radiate in the South Canterbury Steeplechase. In addition, he is sure to have a mount in the Hunters’ Plate Handicap. So that Ellis is practically assured of seven good rides during the day, whereas Gray will not have more than two engagements. One of Gray’s mounts, by the way, is expected to be Town Major in the Claremont Handicap.
