OLD SERVICE STOPS
RIVERHEAD COMPETITION TOO GREAT STEAMER’S LAST TRIP The small ship Kaipatiki. which has been operating between Riverhead and llobsonville for many years, will make her final trip on Saturday. As the result of the increasing competition by road and river transport it has been found expedient to discontinue the service. It was 40 years ago when Messrs. Bradney and Binns first started the service with the Vision. The boat made the trip for a number of years, but was subsequently replaced by two steamers. Pitoitol, I. and Pitoitol 11. In those days traffic was more extensive than at the present time, and the old timber mills at Riverhead gave the small craft much employment. The Pitoitol I. was afterward sold and the sister-ship replaced by the Kaipatiki. Speaking yesterday, Mr. J. H. Bradney remarked that there was never anything more than a bare trade, and now that the roads have improved motor-lorries are obtaining most of the business. The cessation of the Riverhead service will place four men out of employment.
