Funds For Onehunga Free Kindergarten

Energetic Committee Organises Card Afternoon LARGELY-ATTENDED FUNCTION Mrs. David Cuthbert, president of the committee of the Onehunga Free Kindergarten, welcomed the guests who attended the highly successful card afternoon organised by the committee and held in the Tudor room yesterday. Part of the room had been screened off for the players, and beautiful standard lamps and a profusion of bright spring flowers made the room appear very attractive. A colourful note was added by the rich velour velvet table covers in shades of soft green and old rose. In speaking of the committee’s “work Mrs. Cutbert said: “We are differently situated from most of the other kindergarten schools, and find difficulty in obtaining the necessary funds for the work. We have therefore to resort to the collection of clothing for jumble sales and the holding of bridge parties.” On the roll there were 52 children, tlieir ages being from three to five, and it had been made possible by the generosity of friends to give them warm milk and rusks every morning during the winter. Although the committee was not yet in a position to erect a building, a section had been bought and paid for. In conclusion, Mrs. Cuthbert thanked the guests for their support. Bridge and five hundred were played during the afternoon, the prize-winners being Mrs. F. Penty, Mrs. Rex Hook and Mrs. Jackson.
