WINTER CUP WEIGHTS

HISTORIC AND TOXEUMA STRIKING A BALANCE In the Winter Cup, one mile, Historic was awarded topweight, 9.6, and was asked to concede Toxeuma lib. In the seven furlongs Brabazon Handicap next week Mr. Henrys has placed them the reverse way: Toxeuma, Historic. Historic’s party, or some of them, were reported to have been dissatisfied with their Winter Cup handicap, and the horse did not survive the first acceptance. It is now announced that Historic will not make an appearance until the last day of the Grand National meeting, when the seven stone minimum comes into operation. First-class Form Last August Historic carried 10.4 and absolutely donkey-licked the opposition, winning by five lengths. Then followed a victory with 8.11 over Prodice in the Avondale Cup, li miles, a win by a neck with 9.7 over Star Stranger 9.11 in the A.R.C. Mitchelson Cup, li miles. On the second day of the latter fixture Historic and Star Stranger were both awarded 10.0 in the big event, miles. A few days before going South for the New. Zealand Cup, Historic, carryinf 9.13, was narrowly beaten into second place at Carterton by Atholspear over six furlongs, the difference in weight being two stone. Distance Allowances Historic is one of our best handicap horses, and even allowing for the distance the Winter Cup not many will agree that he was harshly treated in being asked to conceed Toxeuma lib. The latter is a real good miler, but from what has been seen of him the Hawke’s Bay galloper is at his best over six furlongs. Good and all that Toxeuma is, he has yet to do as well in a handicap over a mile to measure up to within lib of Historic. In making this difference between them, Mr. J. E. Henrys appears to have balanced matters admirably. There has been a tendency in recent years to treat much too lightly good middle-distance performers engaged in races generally antici-* pated to be a little too short for them. This undue leniency cannot be charged against the C.J.C. officials.
