BEEF MARKET FIRM
Late Commercial —
WESTFIELD STOCK SALE WESTFIELD, 2.30 p.m. Another very short yarding of approximately 450 head of fat cattle came forward to Westfield today to meet a firm market. Choicest ox beef made up to 40r» a hundred; heavy and medium ox made 35s to 37s a hundred. Best cow and heifer made to 37s a hundred. Apart from halt' a dozen lines on account of well-known graziers there was little of outstanding quality in the offering; many lines showed the effect of the recent cold weather and lacked finish. The cow and heifer offering was a particularly nondescript one made up largely of dairy sorts which had either failed to fatten or had been kept too long. It seems that most dairymen have cleared all last season’s culls, and that Westfield will have less to draw on for its cow and heifer section meantime. There was a steady demand throughout, and prices showed little change from last week’s rates. Heavy ox beef was slightly easier at times; cow and heifer beef met with a particularly keen demand. Top price of the day was secured for a line of 14 heavy-prime big-boned steers on account B. Reed, Waerenga. which made from £ls 17s Gd to £l7 5s for a pen which went to T. Collins, Avondale. Extra choice prime steers, on account J. R. Self, Papatoetoe, made from £l4 7s 6d to £l6 12s 6d. Two trucks of well-finished steers on account C. G. Vosper, Cambridge, made £l4 12s 6d to £ls 10s. One truck of medium-weight steers on account Geo. Vosper, Maungatautari. made £l3 to £l4 17s 6d. Six choice prime steers on account G. Hastie, Papatoetoe, made £ls 12s 6d to £ls 17s 6d. Heavy prime steers, generally, made from £l3 10s to £l7 ss; medium, £l2 to £l3 ss; light and small, from £9. Extra heavy prime cows and heifers made to £l2 10s: heavy prime, £ 9 to £lO 10s: medium. £7 5s to £8 15s: light, and small, £5 10s to £7; unfinished and old, from £ 3 10s. The calf offering contained extremes in quality. Medium-sized, well-nour-ished vealers were scarce, but there was a big entry of small and freshdropped sorts. Older calves, the majority not exceptionally well finished, were also yarded in large numbers. Prices held practically on a par with late rates, medium-weight calves selling freely. Runners made up to £6 16s, -wellfinished vealers £4 ss. medium 42s to £3 3s, ancL.small and fresh-dropped 7s to 30s, according to type.
