BUDGET FORECAST
VERY SMALL SURPLUS TO • BE SOUGHT PETROL-TAX PURPOSES THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Today. Most of the Government’s taxation proposals were contained in the tariff resolutions which came before the House last evening, but there is expected to be more taxation contained in the Budget, which will be brought down tomorrow. The petrol duty is already accounted for and the Prime Minister intends in the Budget, it, is believed, to state expressly that the money from the increased tax will be devoted to roadmaking in back-block districts, so that county councils will be assisted. In the Budget there will be, it is understood, and adjustment tax on films, involving increases in the duty. The s'uper-tax on land, which was brought into being last session, will he varied this year, it is stated, with indications for modification in the conditions as a result of the commission of hardship. New land-tax legislation will be necessary. The incometax, so far as can be gathered, will not be touched. Mr. Forbes, in view of the financial circumstances of the country, will budget for a very small surplus.
