BRITISH PREFERENCE INCREASED

DUTY ON FOREIGN GOODS A duty of 5 per cent, ad valorem, in addition to the existing customs duty, is proposed on a number of articles of foreign origin. This is to increase the measure of British preference. The old rates of duty on the goods affected are as follow, the first being the British preferential rate and the second the general or foreign rate, to which the 5 per cent, has to be added: Vegetables.—Preserved peas, in tins or similar containers, 20 p.c. (or Id a lb.), whichever rate returns a higher duty—--40 p.c. (or 2d a lb). Fresh, dried or preserved, n.e.i., 20—40 p.c. Chocolate and cocoa, or chocolate mixed with milk or with any other food substance, 25—45 p.c. Citrus fruit pulps, sweetened or unsweetened, in bulk or otherwise, 20—40 p.c. Biscuits, other than ships’, plain and unsweetened or dog biscuits, 20—40 p.c. Confectionery, including medicated confectionery, liquorice, n.e.i. and sugared or crystallised fruits, 25—45 p.c. Lard, stearine and refined animal fats, n.e.i., 20—40 p.c.
