INFECTIOUS DISEASES
CASES SHOW DECREASE IN AUCKLAND DISTRICT LAST MONTH’S FIGURES Cases of infectious diseases reported to the Health Department from the four health districts in the Auckland Province during June, showed a considerable decrease, the total of 165 being 66 below that for May, and more than 100 below the total in April. In Central Auckland only 80 cases were reported, compared with 151 the preceding month, and in North Auckland the number showed a slight decline, but in the South Auckland and Thames-Tauranga districts an increase was shown. The most prevalent disease was scarlet fever, but the cases reported were 36 below the figure for May. The number of cases of tuberculosis fell from 31 to 25, while the cases of diphtheria reported totalled 21, compared with 43 in May. The 80 cases reported by Dr. T. J. Hughes in the Auckland Central district were:—Scarlet fever, 21; diphtheria, S; enteric fever, 2; tuberculosis, 18; meningitis, 2; pneumonic influenza. 2; pneumonia, 12; erysipelas, 7; puerperal fever, 6; dysentery, 2. The 49 cases reported by Dr. J. Boyd in the South Auckland district comprised the following:—Scarlet fever, 18; diphtheria, 10; enteric fe\*er. 3; tuberculosis, 4; poliomyelitis, 1; pneumonia, 7; erysipelas, 2; puerperal fever, 2; eclampsia, 1; dysentery, 1. In the North Auckland district. Dr. H. Chesson reported the following 22 cases:—Scarlet fever, 6; diphtheria, 2; enteric fever, 1; tuberculosis, 3; pneumonia, 4; erysipelas, 2; puerperal fever, 2; eclampsia. 1; ophthalmia neonatorum, 1. Dr. Chesson also reported the following 14 cases in the Thames-Tauranga district:—Scarlet fever, 9; diphtheria. 1; enteric fever, 1; pneumonia, 2; erj'sipelas, 1.
