NORTH SHORE TELEPHONES

LINK WITH BIRKENHEAD TO BE READY SOON MONTHLY ACCOUNTS POPULAR The new automatic telephone service, connecting Birkenhead and Northcote with the City, will be fin-sc-ribers in those areas some time ago ished in about a fortnight’s time. This service was promised to subby the Postmaster-General, the Hon. ,r. B. Donald, when he officially opened the Birkenhead Post Office. When the service is finally in operation the whole of the North Shore will he connected with the City base-rate area. Subscribers in Birkenhead and Northcote are now' being linked up, and the final W'ork of joining the under-harbour cable with the lines at either end lias been finished. A new departure in the Post and Telegraph Department is the system of paying telephone accounts every month instead of every six months. It is expected that this will largely increase telephone subscribers, particularly in districts where the automatic telephone has been recently installed, such as Birkenhead and Northcote. City subscribers also appreciate the new system of paying dues. They find it easier to pay every month, like an ordinary household account, instead of annually or half-yearly.
