N.Z. LEAGUE DEFEAT
MATCH WITH QUEENSLAND MARGIN OF THREE POINTS BRISBANE, Saturday. ' In a League football match at the exhibition ground today Queensland de- I feated the New Zealanders by 14 points J to 11.. The ground was hard and the weather fine. The attendance was the largest this season. The New Zealand team was: Backs: Dufty, Brisbane, Dodds, Watene Amos, Gregory Abbott. Forwards: Calder, Stephenson, Trautvetter, Griffiths, Clarke and Eckoff. ; Up to the closing stages the match . was anything but brilliant, but the ex- j citement of the last few minutes made j up for much of the dullness. The New Zealanders did not greatly ; impress the spectators by their show- j ing in the first half. Combination was lacking, and they appeared to be suffering a handicap through the inability of some of the players to take the field. However, in the latter stages they rallied, and always were a source of danger to the home side. The Queenslanders, who included seven of the men who toured England last season, were also unable to get going, and the visitors held them well up to half-time, when the score was 9 points to 6 in favour of New Zealand. Dufty kicked three goals and Eckofi' scored a try. In the second half play was more entertaining, with the New Zealanders always harassing the home side, and frequently making dangerous bursts, j They were unable, however, to contend with the final brilliantly-sustained effort by Queensland, and after the scores had been level at 11 points each for several minutes, the home players scored a try which gave them the game. The best of the forwards were Eckoff. Calder and Clarke, and of the backs, Gregory, Dodds and Watene. Dufty was safe and sure at fullback. In the second half Dufty kicked a goal.
