FEILDING CLUB
NEW PRESIDENT ELECTED TRIBUTE TO MR. A. E. SANDFORD Mr. L. Gorton has been elected president of the Feilding Jockey Club unopposed and will take over that office from the retiring president, Mr. A. E. Sandford, at the annual meeting. Mr. Gorton was recently elected a life member of the club in acknowledgement of his lengthy service in an honorary capacity. For 53 years he has been a member of the club and for very nearly the whole of this period he has acted as honorary clerk of the scales. There will be no election for any of the other offices as the members nominated are not in excess of those required. Mr. L. T. McLean is vice-presodent-elect and the retiring committeemen, Messrs. J. B. Bradley, 11. S. Cornfoot, J. Graham and E. E. Short, are all returned unopposed. Mr. W. J. Shannon is also returned unopposed to the position of hon. treasurer. Tho fifty-first annual report of the club refers to the satisfactory year that has been experienced. Being the club’s jubilee year, it was considered advisable to increase the stake money, and advertise more extensively than usual. The stakes were accordingly increased by £395, together with the two handsome gold cups, presented by Messrs. C. F. Johnston and R. L. Levin, and this enabled two attractive programmes to be drawn up. The response from owners was most gratifying, and even though the acceptance fees for some races were reduced, the total nomination and acceptance fees show an increase of £213 over the previous year. All sources of revenue, with the exception of the totalisator, showed increases. An increased turnover of £11,621 at the spring meeting was unfortunately followed by a decrease of £10,964 at the Easter meeting, and although the total turnover for the year showed an increase, the working expenses were heavier. General expenses increased on account of “booming” for the. jubilee year, but a profit of £1,645 7s was made on the year’s working, and, after writing off £1,214 8s 6d for depreciation and £l2 10s 8d for bad debts, the sum of £4lB 7s lOd had been added to the capital account. The. president, Mr. A. E. Sandford, was transferred to Hamilton before the Easter meeting, but the committee unanimously requested him to retain office until the end of the year, and it is his intention to be present at the annual meeting. Since being elected to the committee in 1920, and especially since becoming president in 1927, Mr. Sanford has given a great deal of valuable service to the club. During the term of his presidency the new scheme of improvements was launched and credit is due to him for the successful carrying out of the numerous works therein entailed. It is with regret that we lose the services of such a keen and untiring officer.
LOOKS BETTER RACE IMPROVED BENNIE HAS BEEN A WINNER After a respite extending over several months, Bennie was accorded his first race at the Waipa Racing Club’s meeting at the end of last month. Naturally big things were not ex-« pected from him on this occasion and he raced accordingly, although the fact that he is now much brighter and in better fettle shows that great benefit was derived from the outing. Bennie, a rising four-year-old, last .sported silk in his two-year-old days, when lie was then under the charge ui the late W- Tozer and subsequently T. Carmont, whose success with him included a win in the Onslow Stakes at the Auckland Racing Club’s autumn meeting 16 months ago. E. C. Itae directs the training of Bennie these days and the return to form of the Mountain Knight gelding may be expected. V.A.T.C. Moraghan have made an appearance from their winter quarters, but they are only allowed easy exercise just now. The stable shelters four representatives for the new season in Kamehameha. Master Doon, Mon Star, and the rising two-year-old United, but obviously the usefulness of the first three is restricted. Master Doon, who has not raced for some months, was operated on for respiratory trouble, and he has been allowed plenty of time to make a permanent recovery. lie does nothing better than cantering in the centre of the course these days. Mon Star has been an expensive Australian purchase for her ownertrainer, for she is still a maiden. She has a ragged appearance at present, and will require time to build into good racing condition.
