BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH COUNCIL
The Birkenhead Borough Council held its fortnightly meeting last evening, the Mayor (Mr, J. P. McPhail) presiding. A resolution is to be sent to the Auckland City Council asking that a site be obtained and a free market established.
Permission was granted to the Calliope Harriers to run races on the borough roads. Tho telegraph engineer advised that within a few weeks lie will be in a position to install automatic telephones in the district at city rates within a certain area.
It was decided to strike the following rates: General, 29-16 d: hospital and charitable aid. 'ld: Auckland War Alemorial Aluseum, l-16d; loan redemption and interest, 3 3-8 d; water consumers, Id in the £: non-consumers, id in the £; sanitation service fee. 355». This is the same as last year, with the exception of the sanitation rate, which is increased l»v Is.
In response to the couneil’s representations, the Devonport Ferry Company advised that it would provide spray screens on the vehicular boats: that an extra gangway would be provided during busy periods: and that holders of season tickets on the Birkenhead vehicular boats would be permitted to use them on the Devonport vehicular boats when the other boats are not running.
A vote of thanks was passed to the company for acceding to the council’s requests.
A notice of motion by Cr. Jasper to • rescind a resolution, “That the minii mum charge for water by meter be £ 3 j a year,” was lost.
