SANITATION PROBLEM

COUNCIL AND RATEPAYERS DISAGREE DILEMMA AT TAKAPUNA It is probable that the problem of dealing with, sanitary refuse from the unsewered piart of Takapuna Borough will again come up for discussion at the meeting of the Borough Council tomorrow evening. It is certain that, unless some action is taken by the council shortly, a scheme which may not have the support of all the ratepayers will be put into operation by the Health Department, which has the power to override the local authority. During the past week several suggested sites for a dump have befen inspected by’ the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Williamson, in company with borough officials and representatives of the Health Department. A report will be brought down shortly. The problem has been before the council for many months. The first proposal was to cart the refuse to a spot at Milford, where it could be dumped straight into the main sewer. This was part of the engineer’s original plan, and was approved of by the department, but residents within half a mile of the proposed site objected strongly. A land dump was then chosen on one of the hills close at hand in the Waitemata County, which was prepared to co-operate, but this did not satisfy county ratepayers, residents and golfers from a neighbouring links. Then it was discovered that the site had been gazetted about 21 months before as a cemetery reserve and would be needed for this purpose. Attempts to lease a private property by the two councils fell through at the last moment, and the Waitemata Council then decided on a site which was not suitable for Takapuna. # The Borough Council considered a sewerdump between the O’Neill’s Point Cemetery and Shoal Bay, and a site for a trap was available, but residents blocked the scheme. Action will certainly be taken by the Health Department if some scheme is not put in motion shortly.
