TRAGEDY AT MOUNT EDEN DEATH OF ELDERLY MAN W hile sitting up listening-in to the wireless on Friday evening, Mr. and Mrs. Janies Kimm, of Grange Hoad. Mount Eden, were overcome by ‘he fumes from a portable gas-heater and I when fc/id early on Saturday morn-! mg were in a serious condition. They 1 were admitted to *the Auckland Hos-! pital, where Mr. Kimm died later in the day. Mrs. Kimm is improving. Mr. and Mrs. Kimm lived in a cottage at the rear of a house occur', d by a son-in-law. Mr. C. F. Johns. On Friday evening Mr. Johns left the couple, both of whom were 7S years of age, listening to the wireless. Mr. Kimm being seated in an armchair in front of the gas-heater while Mrs Kimm rested on a settee some feet away. At 6.15 on Saturdav morning Mr. Johns saw a light still burning in the cottage and on investigating found them in the same positions as he had left them in the night before. The lieate-. which was practically white-hot, had severely burned one of Mr. Kimms feet and ankles, which were but a few inches from the heater! Mrs. Kimm had been violently ill. Dr. C. H. Tewsley ordered the couple to the hospital, were Mr. Kimm’s injured foot and ankle was treated, but he died about six o'clock on Saturdav evening. Early this afternoon Mrs Kimm was reported by the hospital authorities to be improving satisfactorily. E. Maguire, medical superintendent of the hospital, intimated that he was prepared to eertifv as to the cause of death and the question was referred to the coroner. An iuque-t may be held this afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Kimm had lived in Mount Kden for many years. There are five of the familv living Mrs C F John and Mrs. H. Farland. Mt. Eden. Mrs. Jellev. Wlllsford. Mrs J Collett. Oamaru, and Mr. \Y Kimm Oamaru.
